Transportation

Space

Humans have always had the urge to move and explore. Our global transportation system gives billions of people the opportunity to live richer, more connected lives. It moves the food we eat, the material goods we use, and large portions of the energy we consume. It provides opportunities for exploration, personal growth, and collaboration. It gives us the tools to explore the world around us and even the universe beyond our single planet. At the same time, the transportation sector is a major source of carbon emissions. Over the next thirty years, we’ll electrify the bulk of transportation by making batteries and energy storage cheaper (you can read more about that in the Energy sector). We’ll create new technologies that make our cars and trucks autonomous, saving hundreds of thousands of lives and hundreds of billions of hours of labor each year. We’ll make aviation both faster and more sustainable. And we’ll radically reduce the cost of access to space, the new frontier, offering both new opportunities to use space technology to serve humans on earth and giving us unprecedented capabilities to better understand and explore the universe around us.

By 2050, new technologies will give us the tools to revolutionize transportation. We will arrive at our destinations more efficiently, and faster, without the burden of human attention to the task of driving - allowing us to use our time on other tasks that matter. Advances in autonomy will make transportation cheaper, safer, cleaner, and easier than ever before for goods to reach people around the world, and for humans to connect with one another. Humanity will take the next steps into the universe around us.
