Bio-manufacturing advances

Biology produces a stunning array of materials with remarkable properties, from the wood we use for building, to incredibly strong spider silk, oils we use as fuels, and more. As synthetic biology advances, the technology to bio-manufacture products will scale and plunge in cost. Among the sectors where we’ll see the greatest advances are:

  • Materials, fabrics, and textiles, where bio-factories will allow us to produce new materials with improved textures, colors, robustness, and without the use of animal hides
  • Renewable chemicals, where bio-factories will produce chemicals that today come from fossil fuels and hard chemistry
  • Alternatives to plastic, which will satisfy consumer demand for lightweight, water-resistant materials, while minimizing the environmental footprint that plastics have today
