Vertical farming cost-competitive for greens and produce
The majority of the world’s population now live in cities rather than the countryside. Over the coming decade, advances in automation, sensors, and our comprehension of agricultural microbiomes will allow us to create indoor farms within those cities that supply fresh greens, produce, and farmed fish, with 90 percent less land, fertilizer, and water use. Because they are closer to consumers, these indoor farms will also provide greens and produce with less spoilage and less food waste.
Advances in indoor farming like those of our portfolio company Upward Farms will bring this to fruition in the 2020s.
